Default 2001 Malibu LS Vent Blower Problems

Over the last 3 weeks or so I have had problems with the vent blowers working at the normaly rapid speed when set to 5 on the dial, but then wait (sometimes a few seconds, or minutes) and it winds down and is barely pushing air at all! When it beings to slow downit sounds like the blower is strugging andbegins making a whining noise. I was thinking about up and replacing it butI was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions!

Thanks!

I had a similar problem but fixed it by changing the blower resistor. Not that much fun to get to under the glovebox, though.

I miss the days when the blower was in the firewall

Usually the problems with the "resistors" is they cause the fan not to work at all at certain speeds ( usually the lower ).

From the description of the blower slowing down and making noise is likely due to the motor itself or some obstruction.

I went to Advance Auto today just to see what they would tell me and I was told I should most likely just replace the blower motor which I plan to do within a week or two. Thanks for the help!

When I did it, I bought a blower first AND then went on to replace it. Once I got under there, I found some dirt and leaves, etc. The contacts seemed dirty, too.

I tested the blower motor out of the car with a full 12 volts (same as speed 5) and it ran perfectly.

Then I tested the resistor with a meter and there were some burned sections.

My advice would be to test it first. Then go to the store. A resistor is cheaper.

Yes, I changed the resistor 2 days ago and was around $20. All 5 speeds back.
