2002 Malibu will not start
Hey!
I just experienced this exact problem with my 02 Malibu. The engine turned over but it wouldn't start when I came back from the store. I checked out this forum and found this thread. I tried the 10 minute wait with the key to the on position until the theft lock light stopped flashing, turned the key off for one minute and then tried starting it, it started right up without hesitation and ran perfectly fine.
Thanks for the info, it helped!

I had the same problem with my 2006 mabilu. Some days it would start some days I would have to sit in the car for hrs then it would finally decide to start. Sometimes it wouldn't start for days. Finally I got a auto start with security system on it and haven't had a problem in 5 month. The problem was the computer in the car and the security. I am so happy someone suggested it. I thought I would have to buy a new car because I was tired of being strained.
I had a similar problem with my 2002 mabilu, continuing on some four weeks. I stated getting idiot lights coming on and off. It didn't make sense. Battery light, then abs, then service engine. That happen for two days, on third day in the evening, I went to go somewhere, the car won't start. I tried starting it till the battery ran down. I charged the battery back up overnight, The next after reading up on problems, I tired the passcode reset, even thought security light wasn't on or blinking. After three or four times doing a 30 (3X10) minute routine and just taking a chance of pounding on the gas tank it started. I took it over to the autozone to have the alternator check, showed good. The next day it happen again, not starting. So I got a new alternator, because the light blinking, replaced it. then mess around with passcode reset it started again. Fix lasted a week, the 8th day coming home going down the road it just stopped running and wouldn't start again. So towed to the local garage. They found / thought that the fuel pump was bad and replaced it for ($600) dollars. I though it was fixed! LOL. 9 days later after church I park at Ihop, after breastfast it won't start again. (BTW - at this point I'm listen for fuel Pump I don't hear it). Back to the garage (after 3 days and the guy finding nothing, because it started again). He tells me it's fine, I get the vehicle. The very next night I drive it to Bingo, after it does it again. After paying around with the key in ignition switch it starts. (the switch seems to have a bad spot). Switch replaced with salvage yard take out this morning. After password reset, it fine and off I go till I stop and turn off the car. Doesn't start again, I hear no fuel pump. After kicking the car and the dash board a couple times it starts again and I get home. I've checked, fuses, relays, wiring, but still don't know if it will start tomorrow and just stop running again. HELP, does anyone have a clue (I don't).
Do you have another set of keys that you can use? The key that you are now using may be bad. The key cylinder may not be recognizing your existing key. Maybe have the Chevy Dealer order you a new key. Let us know if that was it.
The ignition switch and key were replaced. New issue though. Finding a bad fuse and replacing it, fuse for fp inj, fuel pump working again. NEW problem - seems BCM has some issue. Car starts. Most things controlled by the BCM don't work. Not working are Fuel and temperature gauges. The left idiot lights stay on (service soon, air bag, seat belt, brake) right idiot lights stay out, door jar, battery, the others. Not working Interior lights, truck release, door locks, more. all fuse related to BCM , in main fuse panel and driver door fuse panel are good. Connection to the BCM are good. Any ideals?
air conditioner compressor, and radiator cooling fans not running too add to the list, yet car start and runs down the road pretty good. All BCM fuses that I can idenfity and find are good. IS there a master fuse or relay for the BCM? Is there a fuse inside the BCM? Does the master computer control any of these functions, see messages above. Any and mean any help would be appreciated.
The check engine light is not lit as are the rest of the idiot lights on the right side of IP not lit. All idiot lights on the left side of the IP are all on and stay on after a few seconds follow startup of motor. There are no code on the computer when checking with my tester. Update, The ignition switch and key were replaced. Most things controlled by the BCM don't work. Not working are Fuel and temperature gauges. The left idiot lights stay on (service soon, air bag, seat belt, brake) right idiot lights stay out, door jar, battery, check engine and the others. Not working Interior lights, truck release, door locks, more. all fuse related to BCM , in main fuse panel and both door fuse panels are good. Connection to the BCM are good. Air conditioner compressor, and radiator cooling fans not running too. It will start and runs down the road pretty good. All BCM fuses that I can identify and find are good. IS there a master fuse or relay for the BCM? Is there a fuse inside the BCM? Does the master computer control any of these functions, see messages above. Any and mean any help would be appreciated.
