Having problem with key not turning in ignition.

Parked car last night on flat level ground. Put it in park, turned off motor, pulled key from ignition, got out, closed door and set the alarm. All normal stuff.

Later wnet back, unlocked car with key, got in, placed key in ignition, and it won't turn at all. Not one click. I'm not talking about the ignition/starter not turning. THe Steering wheel, which would normally be in a "lock" position, can still be turned right and left, although very hard. The Transmission is in Park. : all the way, no play in the Stick shift..

WHat's going on?
