2004 Chevy Malibu Classic, low rough idle, sputters then dies
I drove my car just down the street, less than a block, without any problems. I stopped and turned the key and got out. I was out of the car for a total of about 1 to 2 minutes, then got back in and tried to crank it. The car started, but the idle was low and very rough. I tried putting it into reverse, and it began to roll backwards, but would not move when I pressed the accelerator. Then it sputtered and died. I tried to start it again, and had the same experience, except I did not shift gears. It sputtered and died again. The windows, lights and radio work just fine when I have the key turned. There is a little more than a quarter tank of gas in it. Has anyone else had problems like this? What might be the cause?
Welcome to the forum.
Can you keep the engine from stalling with the accelerator? If so, it could be your IAC valve went kaput. If you could find a way to keep the throttle from closing completely, you should be able to drive it to a repair shop.

If your vehicle is stranded like that, I guess there isn't much you can do. Check for the obvious things like fuse and relay that powers the fuel pump and plugged up air cleaner element. Also, sometimes the fuel gauge or fuel level sensor can be faulty and you can be actually out of fuel.
