If the '06 Malibu dome light is anything like the '05 G6 dome light (which I think they should be similiar), actually has a 3 positions. The left position is off, the middle position is doors, and the right position is on. Have you tried switching the switch to the middle position?

I having the same problem. I think it's in the dome light switch, but i am having difficulty accessing it. Got the dome light cover off but I can't seem to remove the housing to access the switch.

found the problem! the switch on the dome light itself was damaged. Apparently poor workmanship where it was built. The current line for the door position was not properly set into the housing, so when the switch was used numerous times, it came loose. I might be able to reset the metal strip into the housing, but if not I will have to replace the housing unit.
