Check both ends of the cable and make sure that it has not come out. At the handle and at trunk lock. If that's not it have somebody watch the lock while you pull the handle and see if its moving at the lock.
or is it electric? check fuse and relay? use a test light to check power to switch and the out side of the switch when the button is pushed. If they both have power check it at the trunk while somebody pushes the button.

It's electrical. The BCM senses the trunk release request when the switch grounds the circuit. Since the key fob works, the common path between the BCM and trunk latch (fuse, relay, and actuator) is good. Then, the switch must be bad (the lower edge of the door isn't the best place environmentally) or there's a wiring problem between the switch and the BCM or ground.
