Default engine swap ?

hi gang im new here. i have a 97 4dr sedan with a 3.1 thats blown .i have a chance to get another out of a 92 but im not sure ,will it fit? also does it have to be the exact same engine to be a problem free swap? what are my options? thanks in advance.

the only thing i ran into with swapping a 3.1 was the harness plug for the fuel injectors was different, my donor motor was from a '92, going into a '94. check b4 u go through the hassle of getting it if it won't hook up. everything else connected/bolted up no problem.

I need better detail. like what model car you have and what model car is the transplant motor out of. if the good 3.1 is out of a pontiac or buick, youll have different size electrical plugs..

its the same car just a year older,i havnt be able to see it yet and i dont know what year the generation change is for malibu,s.

I coulda sworn that chevy malibu's production was from 1964-83 then from 97-present.

i had my doubts also . i kept looking and found a 98 malibu 3.1 (perfect) 120,000 ks for $400 i,ll be putting it in this weekend,should go smooth its identical in everyway . makes for a hassle free swap,ill let you know next week how it all went. wade.
