Malibu Theft Alarm
Hey guys, first off I would like to say I LOVE my Malibu, but lately she's been a little under the weather. I'm actually in the process of doing a whole bunch of repairs to get her back to running like new. One being the theft system issue on these cars. I found a pretty awesome video on Youtube, and need a few questions answered.
Here's the link: How to Fix Theft Passlock System on GM Cars - Chevy Malibu - YouTube
Now, after the toggle is installed how exactly is it operated? I know this may sound dumb, but I didn't understand him in the video. Once it's installed is it in the "off" position during normal operation? And when the theft light is blinking and not allowing me to start the car, is that when I switch it to the "on" position? And when I do so does the light go out or remain on until the car is shut off again? If anyone has any idea please let me know, because this is driving me nuts! Winter is approaching and I don't want to be trapped in the cold, so I need to get this done soon. Much thanks for all the help in advance!!

I have no issues when the car is running, and the light is only on when the car is off. I understand its not fixing it, but it is in the fact that I can start the car when I want lol. I just want to know how to operate the switch, how is that done?
Ok just so I got this straight....
So once its installed, the toggle will be set to the off position. The security light will be on all the time, and when I run into the problem of not being able to start the car, I turn it to the on position. I'm kinda confused lol. So when its on the on position does the light go out? I don't get why the security light will be on all the time in the off position, but off on the on position lol. Sorry if I'm confusing you, I just want to know exactly what's what before I cut anything...

I'm sorry if I'm a little slow lol...
I keep being told that you can't fix it without bringing it to the dealer, so I was thinking this was my only option. I would much rather fix it the right way like you mentioned. Is there a way to know that the lock cylinder is for sure the culprit? I would also change the switch like you mentioned. I've just read a ton of threads on how they change the lock cylinder and it doesn't work...I would just like to know that it was the issue before I shelled out the money for it. And when you say the switch goes, closely following the passlock failure, are you saying something else is going to go bad on top of the two things you mentioned?
Also, thanks a lot for helping me out with this! It's driving me out of my mind...I keep showing up late for work, and it's a big inconvenience sometimes.

There's no "something else." The Passlock sensor is located at the end of the lock cylinder on your vehicle. When the lock cylinder is turned smoothly with a key, the sensor sends a voltage signal to the BCM. The theft deterrence lies in the fact that forceful turning of the lock cylinder destroys the Passlock sensor mechanism. There are a couple of ways the theft deterrence kicks in erroneously. A worn-out lock cylinder won't trigger the sensor correctly. Also, a bad ignition switch can introduce voltage fluctuation in the BCM which in turn can wreak havoc with the voltage signal from the sensor. Thus, if you replace one thing and leave the other, chances are 59-50 that it won't work now or shortly after.
BTW, I'll be deleting my posts in this thread in a couple of days since I think I posted too much detail on the theft deterrent system.

You can't go wrong with ACDelco parts. The thing is, a lot can go wrong in the install and besides, the lock cylinder will need to be rekeyed to match the VIN. My usual recommendation is to call an automotive locksmith. Good luck.
