Question no pwrsteering pump?

my girlfriends 04 malibu is having power steering problems. The info center is displaying POWER STEERING and the problem is that sometimes there is no power steering. It usually happens right when u start the car. Its like its power is gone. If u turn the car off and restart it that usually takes care of the problem and power is back. Can someone PLEASE explain how and where or what kind 0f system they put in this car. Also when u turn the steering wheel it makes a klunking sound. this happens when unit is working and when it isnt. Its hard to just shut off the car when steering unit goes out and you are driving. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The 2004 - 2007 Malibu (not the '04 Malibu Classic) does not use a hydraulic power steering system, and as such does not have a pump or power steering fluid.

It has an electric power steering system and uses an electric motor to power the steering system.

I can only suggest if the DIC (Driver Info Center) says POWER STEERING, and you have power steering issues, to have a service center with the appropriate diagnostic computer scan the car and see what's wrong as soon as possible. Having the power steering go out while driving at highway speeds is very dangerous.

As for the clunking, it's probably related as these Malibu models ('04-'07, except for SS models) are notorious for steering problems, including rack and pinion, steering column and lubrication of same, electronic sensors, and on and on.
