Oil life monitor
Should I follow the Oil life monitor or the dealers service dept recommendations for oil changes, I have a 2007 Malibu LS with the 4 cylinder engine, My service advisor at the dealership recommends oil changes every 3000 miles, the OLM is still above 70% every time I get the oil changed. Any advice?
Your oil life monitor is a compilation of several items that the on board computer is monitoring, speed, temperature, stops and starts etc.. It is meant to be helpful not a direct order. My advice is , if you drive enough to really heat up the engine on 20/30 mile trips change the oil every 6 to 9 months. If you make mostly short trips that barely get the engine heated up, change it at 3000 miles or three months.
GM states use the oil life, there recommendation, I myself use 5000 miles.
The PCM compensates for short trips, low temp etc. Dealer needs the oil change money, will not make your car any better.
In the winter using oil life it will be about 5000 miles, in the summer 7500 miles or more.
