I assume you knew that the remote start wasn't working but the deal was too good to pass up? There are several conditions that have to be met before the starter can be engaged safely. Someone may jump in here with a story about the often overlooked hood ajar switch but let me mention that it isn't practical to try to diagnose the problem as a whole without a Tech 2 scan tool. If this feature is important to you, consider a visit to the service department. Any GM dealership would do.

when i was looking into this vehicle the dealer didn't mention that it had a remote start and didn't advertise as one of the options until after i got it home and went through the papers in the glove box and found the original gm window sticker

So, I guess you can't take it back and complain about it. Hope it doesn't need a major surgery to get it working.

Checking all fuses and relays is always a good place to start.... a fresh set of batteries in the remote is also worth a try...I know you said the lights flashed but it eliminates one possible cause....
