Default TCC solenoid

Got check engine light on my 2002 Malibu this morning. Diagnosis said TCC slip speed is greater than 200 RPM for 6 seconds.?????????........ Tech said it's the solenoid. Is this expensive to replace? He didn't know. Not a transmission specialist.

Don't know what model trans the 02 has. My 97 has the 4T40 3spd w/ OD. I was quoted anywhere from $700 -$1K for the torque converter. Providing that is the issue. Most times you cannot tell until the case is opened up. In my case, once opened I needed a completed rebuild. I got it done for $2500 out the door from a name brand shop. The average for my model rebuild ran about $2300-$3200. I actually got a decent deal.

I would take it to a reputable shop that can give you an accurate estimate. Avoid the shade tree mechanics on this one.The money saved will only haunt you later if its not done to factory specs.
