Default 2003 keyless programming problem

Wife owns a 2003 Monte Carlo.

Keyless entry fob quit working. She went to a battery store and they said it checked out OK as far as battery power.

She went to the dealership and purchased a new remote.

Using the instruction manual (also found at: http://www.programyourremote.com/) step #2 is: "Press and hold the DISP button on the radio for at least five seconds until settings is displayed."

That is where the problem lies. Doing that for up to 5 minutes at a time there is no "settings" being displayed. All we see is the clock ticking away.

Reading the owner's manual I see many functions can be programmed via that method. None of which we can do because we can't get the radio to access the "settings" as it is supposed to do.

Any and all thoughts on what to try next is certainly welcome. Except for having the dealership program it. Long story but the dealership is SLEAZE and she won't let them touch her car.
