i just got a 96 lumina with the 3.1 L82 engine, and during idle the RPM surges and jumps around on its own around (800-1000rpm), and it stalls sometimes, but other then that, the engine sounds good without knock or smoke.

what could be the problem?

Sounds like a vaccum leak.
