Angry '98 Lumina w/ high rpm's

Hello,

Recently my 98' 3.1L Chevy Lumina has been idling very high. For example:
This morning I was stuck in traffic for over an hour and not moving at all. My car was sitting idle at 2500 rpm's. Finally got off of the free way and had to stop at the gas station, put the car in reverse and as soon as I switched gears to reverse it hit 4k rpms and slammed into gear, I shut the car off and the tach didn't move from 4k rpms until I restarted it. And after restarting, it was still idling high. Please help with detecting this problem. The car has run great. I purchased it with 100k about 3 years ago and it now has 161k. Also, do you think with it reving high, it would cause it to use more fuel??
PLEASE HEEELP!!
