Engine stumbles
2005 3.8L turbo
i have a guys car i'm helping him get fixed it has these codes i cleared the codes and then ran the car in the yard and i got p0480 first, then p0121 and p0122 showed up and then p0036. i pulled the maf and i got p0101 as expected and it engine stalled as expected so i think i do not have issues there
p0036 i will not bother with now it has a loud exhaust so that may be that code, but the engine stumbles at idle and at some speeds i rev the engine and it returns to idle but wants to stall it did stall a few times and if i tweaked the gas it got a steady idle. it idles at 800 rpm ish give or take a bit.
i jumpered the low fan relay to prove out the fans from the relay to the fans and they both ran at relay 1 speed. the fuses are good. but i did find out that the a/c low on freon can cause the p0480 code also. also the iat might cause it, i did unpug the iat and nothing changed but i have had that not do anything on lots of cars.
i also ran live data and i was getting neg nunges on the short and long terms short term ran as from -4.0 to 0,0 and now and then i got plus numbers long term was -14.0 and i did see a -19.0 but now i do not recall if that was at the startup and then it got better or worse.
i took off a connector that was by that vacuum unit that runs some valve behind the TB and before the turbo i do not know what that valve is but there was a gray 4 pin connector and if i unplugged that the fans turned on and the temp gage dropped from temp to zero. i have had that on other engines but on this one i have to find out if it has 2 temp sensors and maybe the fan temp switch is bad and turns on the ecu first after clearing the codes.
also i sprayed start fluid around the engine and when i sprayed behind the turbo by the main fuse area is sounded like the engine stumble went away and i did see the short trims go into plus numbers so if these engines have gasket issues with the turbo or maybe i can retorque it to see if that cures the lean condition? also if i can get a vacuum hose routing so i can find all the vacuum hoses and make sure they are not leaking behind the maf and causing the leans or stumbles.
also during the test run the engine did run good in open loop and soon it did start the stumble and one time after it got warm it ran like **** for maybe a minute and then cleared up and ran fairly good but still had the stumble. so that may have been the tps issue. also i unplugged the tps at idle and it did not change and i revved it and it ran so it may be running in a default mode with a bad tps sensor.
thanks for any ideas but a vacuum hose routing will be a big help so i can make sure the hoses are not the neg trims issue
thanks

to clarify: Is this a supercharged vehicle? has it been turbo swapped?
if the idle problem is the primary issue start diagnosing the p0121 p0122 dtc. and if you want to address the tp dtc is it a drive by wire car?

this is original engine from wht the owner said i plan to address the p0121-122 code. what i will do first is make sure the TB is clean and that, that is not the issues with the p0121-122 code.
also when i ran live data i had neg numbers on the trims -4.0 to 0.0 for short trims and -14.0 on the long trims. it kind of looked like they whet into + when i had a guy spray the back passenger side on the area of the turbo and intake by the fuse blocks, so i'm trying to find out if these engine have a issue with the turbo getting lose over time? i may try to just re-torque the bolts down and see if the trims return. also i could not tell if there is a vacuum line back in that area? that is why i was also looking for a vacuum hose route diagram to see if by chance there is a vacuum line back there and when i sprayed starting fluid in that area the trims came back. so if any one can help me out on that it may be the root of the stalling at idle and the stumbling and the trims in the neg numbers.
but if it does have a dirty TB that may also be the trim neg numbers with the plate held open and the ecu sees the TP on the high side and leans out teh mixture if that is possible?. unless
the car is not drive by wire it has a cable and i can accel it from under the hood by hand.
i'm not to sure yet why i see the p0480 but i did see talks of the a/c pressure switch also causing this code. the temp gage is working and if i unplug the temp sensor at the gray plug that is by the vacuum motor at the side of the TB the temp gage drops to zero and the fans turn on so that is telling me the relays and fuses are working, besides i ohmed the fuses and i swapped the relays to prove them out also.
i will deal with the p0036 later after i get the TPS repaired. that may be a bad 02 or wires but one code at a time.
thanks
