They're relatively easy to remove and replace. And if you are checking one to see if it's become hard and brittle, you're already halfway there to put in the new one on. While I haven't bought any for years, they're relatively inexpensive. They look like a O-ring with a square cross-section.

You will need another set of valve cover gaskets. The only tools you'll need are a valve spring compressor, an air coupling that will screw in to the spark plug hole to prevent the valve from dropping, and a magnet to assist in removing the keepers. I suspect there are YouTube videos describing this in detail.

Hey Yes, there is a diaphragm in mechanical fuel pumps that can indeed go bad.When that happens, the pump might start sucking oil, leading to engine smokeAlso check the seals; they could be the culprit.I’d also suggest replacing the pump if you’re having these issues.Better to prevent than to cure!
