Default 01 burb instrument cluster and trans problem

I recently acquired a 2001 Suburban and it has a bad instrument cluster. The gas gauge points south. Gonna take it out a have it repaired. The other day the gear shift started tripping...I'd be in drive and it would automatically switch to R or P or whatever. Then It would not shift or go. It's like the trans just broke. Sounds like I'm revving the gas. Checked levels...Ok. Tried again in D but no go. I used the wait and feel tran engage test and it was on N or 3 positon. Start driving, here bumpin in tran case and/or differential. Basically, tranny worked fine. But now it's doesn't shift or shifts when it feels like it. What is goin on? Any answers...appreciated.
