The fuel pump will begin humming as soon as you turn the key on. The pump has a certain amount of fuel pressure that it will keep in the lines. Once the pump has achieved that amount of pressure in the lines it will shut off. As the truck fires up the pump will continuously maintain pressure in the lines. The pump is easy to hear when you first turn the key on, but once you are going down the road you shouldn't hear it anymore. It is located in the fuel tank so you will hear it coming from the rear of the truck. I have a 03 reg cab silverado and while it's running you can only hear the fuel pump humming when you walk by the gap between the cab and the bed. Other than that you usually can't hear it. I don't know how loud the humming is that you hear, but that is the only humming that I hear on my truck. Letme know what you find out.
