Default New to Forum, Anyone with Off Road Advise?

I purchased my Tahoe new in 1999 with the birth of my first child. It has proven a great family mover, trailer puller, ski bus....a true utility vehicle.
Since moving to Northern B.C. I have ridden passenger during some great off road jaunts in friends vehicles, wondering all along if I couldn't have taken my Tahoe? It never struck me the type of vehicle you would want to "Off Road" in. That was then....
So I am just looking for some advice on preparing it for some excursions off the beaten path. I think I can squeeze some taller tires to start, and I would want to remove the running boards and front cowl. I am wondering about skid plates and what to protect. Any other advise people might have.
I am not heading off into bumper deep mud, but rather rocky trails with the odd bumper deep stream crossing.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
