Default Class action lawsuit. Generation IV Vortec 5300 engines burn too much oil

Affected vehicles:

2010-2014 Chevrolet Avalanche
2010-2012 Chevrolet Colorado
2010-2013 Chevrolet Express
2010-2013 Chevrolet Silverado
2010-2014 Chevrolet Suburban
2010-2014 Chevrolet Tahoe
2010-2013 GMC Canyon
2010-2013 GMC Savana
2010-2013 GMC Sierra
2010-2014 GMC Yukon
2010-2014 GMC Yukon XL

According to the lawsuit, the Vortec engines burn abnormally high amounts of oil that is way above industry standards, resulting in low oil levels and engine damage.

The lawsuit alleges the TSBs admit the 5.3-liter engine problems are caused by PCV issues, problems with the piston rings and flaws in the active fuel management systems.

The GM 5.3-liter engine lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, Cleveland Division - Szep, et al., v. General Motors LLC.

I don't know if there is a recall. You can web search for the lawsuit and see if you can get in on the class action.

The United States department of transportation (DOT) looks after safety recalls, so you can always submit your vehicle identification number (VIN) on their website to see if there are recalls for your vehicle.

Add more vehicles to the list that burn oil.

GM recently settled a $40M lawsuit. The GM settlement covers 2010 to 2013 Equinox and Terrain SUVs equipped with 2.4-liter Ecotec engines.

I'm surprized by the model years listed. the "fix" for the pcv, afm was done in late 2009. what about the oil burners from 2007 to 2009?

If I remember correctly, the jets in these engine were squirting too much oil at the piston skirts and overloading them. Later years "fixed" the problem by adding shields to block the jets LOL. Sloppy piston rings were updated. PCV was contributing to the problem as well.

the 5.3; the shield was for the afm relief valve. It overloaded the oil control rings. the first recall involved soaking the rings in a combustion cleaner in engine, dropping the oil pan, installing the shield and new driver side valve cover. the 2010 came off the assembly line "fixed"... but apparantly not.

The nox's were and still are a diaster...the first gen nox's were good...the second..junk.
add the stretched timing chains on the 3.6s, the cruze failures...at least the camaro did well.

Savana 5.3's don't even have AFM, yet they're still afftected so there must be more to it.

I never personally dealt with a non afm oil burner, but many afm. The 4.8 and 6.0 never burned a drop...i attributed these engines being ok due to not having afm. there may, indeed, be more to it.

Yeah mine doesn’t burn any but it’s still low mileage. Hopefully it stays that way.
