So I work for a cattle breeding company as their in house mechanic and I've been working on all the newer trucks and getting them running good, but I'm just kinda starting in the mechanics world. So my job threw me working on this old beast and I don't really know how to go about diagnosing something this old. The battery and battery leads are new so that's not the issue but it tries to start runs super rough if it does start for a second then dies. Please any Info would be greatly appreciated. First I'd look at the fuel filter in the carb, also if there is an external filter. Next, with line off the carb, crank the engine, are you getting gas from the pump? I am making an assumption this is a carb engine, with mechanical fuel pump.

 

I would also look at the points, condenser, plugs and wires.

 

A 68 is great! No computer; just have to address air, spark & fuel.
How long has the truck been sitting not running; how old's the gas? May need something as simple as fresh gas, new fuel filter & carb rebuild.
Can you keep it running by giving it gas?

 

So I added some new gas still runs a sec then dies. It has new fuel line routed in it and fresh fuel filter. I didn't know there was another in the carborator I'll check that out. And I'm not sure what the condenser is.. or what points your talking about. I'll check out the distributor cap, wires, and plugs

 

 

When you say "added gas", are you putting it into the carb? If so, does it run ok for that short duration? The fuel line going into the carb, that is where the filter is.

 

No I only added to the tank, should I try adding to the carb? And I took everything off the top down to the carb and put back together and now all I get is click click click. Doesn't even try to turn.hopefully didn't **** something up.

 

Dead battery. Charge it. Pull the filter out of the carb, with the battery charged, and with help, see if the fuel pump is pumping gas into a can or jar.

 

Does this still have the mechanical fuel pump, or did you replace it with an electric?
