Car won't start sometimes
Hi there. I know this is a Chevy Forum but I am a member because I have a 2009 Chevy Impala. I am asking for help with my daughter's car. This is her problem.
Her 1998 Mercury Sable seems to be very selective when it comes to starting. Before I would be able to start it with the key but lately that hasn't been the case. I will turn the key to start it, and nothing will happen. It doesn't make any noise, only the lights on the dash will come on, and it's almost like it needs an extra push to start. When this happens I rely on my command start. I'll start it up, put the key in and before I
was usually able to drive away. BUT NOW, when I have gone to use my command start, everything seems fine until I go to shift then everything just shuts off. This problem has happened to me more than once, and just occurs randomly. I have noticed however, that it tends to happen almost
every time I get gas. The last time I thought I was going to be stuck at the pump. I just kept trying to start it (switching in between just turning the key, and using command start) and it finally worked after 15+ times. I've taken it to the garage when the problem wasn't as bad, and
they fixed the ignition switch. At first it seemed like the problem was solved, but now I'm having the exact same troubles. When I took it back to the garage, the guys there said that they couldn't scan for any codes because every time they went to start it, it either didn't happen or
when it did it wasn't that bad and would work the next time they tried. Does anyone know what the problem could be? I've read that it might be the fuel pump, but I have no idea. I'm just sick of my car not starting. Any ideas?

you can rule out the fuel pump. a bad fuel pump would still allow the starter to crank the engine over, not a no crank condition that you have described.
Does it have an aftermarket remote start system?
When the fault is active....do you hear a single click of the starter solenoid. If yes, this tells you the car is commanding a start request...so suspect a bad starter or loose battery and starter connections.
Always rule out a bad battery before diagnosing the starting system.
