Default 1987 S10 - What is this part?

Hello, This broken part was located on top of my engine, with two vacuum lines coming from it. I connected the two vacuum lines together, and the vehicle is running. (Running very ****ty - from a gas problem?)
I do not have the money to repair/replace this part right now (will replace soon), and I was wondering:
1. What is this part?
2. How important is it?

Thank you!

It looks like your ported vacuum switch. Do the hoses run to your EGR or distributor for vacuum advance? By the way the parts 18 bucks at Autozone.

Thank you very much, I am not sure - I don't know much about vehicles, just learning as I go. One hose runs to the throttle-body, the other runs to a can about the size of a coffee can with other hoses at the very far-right front of the vehicle.

Oh its for your Evap canister then. It's your EVAP Canister purge valve then. If you have no emissions laws you can just pull the can and valve ansdmake sure you plug the hole in the TBI unit.
