Default 1998 S10 2.2L Ignition Control Module

Hi All, I am in the middle of installing a tachometer in my truck and wasn't sure where the ignition control module is located on the engine. I found online it is on the lower passenger side of the engine but am afraid to start cutting wires especially when it is the ignition system. The wire I need to connect has be connected to the ignition module in order for the tachometer to work. Anything like pictures or diagrams would be helpful....Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. The ICM is what the ignition coils are mounted on. Follow the spark plug wires. That said, are you sure the tachometer is designed for the 2.2L? There's no TACH signal to be found like the 4.3L.

The tach is designed for 4, 6, and 8 cylinder engines. If there isn't a tach signal for it, what kind of tachometer will I have to look for?

I got confused when you wrote it "has be connected to the ignition module." So, you're indeed looking for some TACH signal. There's none to be found at the ICM on the 2.2L but the PCM has that information and sends it out as the TACH OUT signal over the WHT wire from connector C2, terminal 10. This wire goes to the terminal A3 at the instrument cluster. I'm not certain if this wire will be present if your cluster lacks the tachometer gauge, though.

Where would the PCM be located? I am not too familiar with the 2.2 engines.

You looked for the white wire at the instrument cluster end and didn't find one? The PCM is under the hood, passenger side. It's your vehicle but I'd rather you leave the PCM alone, though. Mistakes can happen and it'd be a shame to screw up the PCM over a lousy tachometer.

At this point yes, I will probably just leave the thing alone. I thought it would be a good idea to have one, but really isn't worth the headache. Thanks for the help.

You're quite welcome. I don't know what your budget is but a ScanGauge gadget may fit the bill. It's basically an OBD scanner in the guise of a trip computer.

if you got a sunpro tach, i was in the same confused situation. In order to install it, you need to buy an adapter. no GM vehicle with a 2.2 can run a tach without the adapter. the adapter connects to the orange and white wires on the ignition module. I just got my adapter in the mail yesterday so i can install my tach.
here is the link for the adapter i bought: SunproŽ
