Hello all,

I am in the market to buy a used 2000 Chevy S-10, and the guy I am buying it from says that there is a check engine light on, and that's it's caused by one of the cats. Is this possible or is it just an excuse? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

It is possible for a CEL to be caused by a cat but more likely it is an o2 sensor or something similar. Knowing the actual code would clarify whether or not it is an easy or cheap fix.

 

Most likely he is telling the truth. It probably has a PO420 catalyst efficiency below threshold bank 1 or PO 430 catalyst efficiency bank 2 (if it is a 6 cylinder). You need to have the computer scanned for code to be sure. If it does not run bad that is most likely the case.

I'm really just want a pick up to use as a beater and hauler, and I've always loved the s-10. I drive a slightly modified 2005 TL, and I don't like driving it in snowy weather, and I'm starting to do some handyman work, so having a truck is crucial.

It's a 2000 S-10 Xtreme Pickup, 4cyl, auto, 2Dr reg cab, black with 134k on the clock. He's asking $2800 OBO. Does this sound reasonable?

Also, is there anything else that I should look for that is notorious for problems on these trucks?
