Default Clutch Change

I have a 1989 S10 that has had two new clutches fitted in the last five years, the first one was fitted to replace the original that had worn out, it didn't work correctly from day one. The second one was fitted to replace the badly working one and that to hasn't worked correctly.
Now the truck is mine so I want to try and put things right. I have been told that there are two different types of clutch fitted to this truck (I was told thatthe release bearing/throw out bearing are different lengths)and you need the chassis/VIN number to get the correct clutch, can anybody clarify this for me before I order another wrong clutch kit.
Thanks.
