i took the alternator and belts off before i started the fan removal process. Is this a mistake?

What the trick to getting the fan assembly off?

what i did was used a big a$$ wrench and then used a big screwdriver and placed it through the bolts holdin the pulley so that the pulley wouldnt turn, then i took my wrench and put it on the large nut holding the the fan to the pulley and got it off that way. It might help to have two people do it. And it shouldnt matter if u took alternator off first
