Default Fuel level sensor 03 trailblazer LT

Need some advice on changeing the fuel level sensor on my 03 trailblazer. I'm pretty sure that this is the problem of inacurate fuel readings and multiple fuel run outs. I though it was the guage cluster again but i got that replaced a few months ago. The fuel guage read 1/4 tank left when my wife ran out of gas a few days ago. Can anybody tell me the best way to test this sensor? Or is it a replace and hope type thing? Also i'm guessing i'll have to drop the tank to replace this? Should i replace the fuel pump right away too? Thanks..

There are 2 ways to test it the first way you would need a gauge tester. You can dial in resistance with it. You would tap it into the gauge circuit at the tank then you can dial in resistance the gauge would read different levels based on the amount resistance (would let you test full sweep of gauge). However unless you are a auto tech. you pobally do not have one. The other way is to touch the signal wire to ground (at the tank) and see if the needle moves. Alot of fuel level senders fail due to sulpher deposites you can try a product called BG44K, it is a fuel injector cleaner that you put in the tank (commercial strength). It will remove the sulpher. It works on about 50% of cars we use it on. It will take atleast 1 tank of gas to work. You can find a shop that sells it at www.bgfindashop.com
