Default Possible Silverado Owner Questions

  • I'm considering purchasing a 2000 Silverado 1500 Reg Cab w/ 4.3l V6.
  • Is this motor powerful enough for this truck? I only plan doing some light towing (16 ft jonboat).
  • Is there anything I should pay close attention too before purchasing?
  • Are there any common problems with these older trucks I should be aware of before purchasing?
I would greatly appreciate any additional insight shared.

Thanks

I wouldn't recommend a 6 cyl. engine for hauling. There's plenty of nice Silverados with small 8s which would do a fine job.

Two considerations:
1) reserve capacity-This may even seem to go against the grain, as it seems to always be the American way to get the maximum by applying the absolute minimum you can get away with, but extra stopping power, handling ability, and acceleration(as well as transmission cooling) become important factors, especially in a crisis situation. (like that hilly road at night in the rain)

2) mechanical degradation of vehicles over time-that V6, new, with low mileage on the drivetrain probably could arguably do a fine job of towing that boat. This is a used vehicle which has had multiple owners. How is it going to hold up 2,3, or 5 years from now?
