Default Punch'n Holes

Someone recommended that I should make a hole in the plastic off to the side of the grill for the intake to have more access to air. It would essentially be a large hole to the left of the grill on the side where the filter is located. I'm installing a Volant cold air intake and I'm wondering if the hole would be beneficial.

Anybody heardof this?

The plastic piece is there to keep water from tire spray out of the engine compartment, if you cut it out your filter element will become saturated on rainy days.
Probably not a good idea.
