Ring and pinon question!!!!!
I recently bought an 08 silverado and had a noise coming from the rear end. I took it to Chevy and they fixed it. Soon after the noise came back, so I took it to a rear end specialist. He told me it was the ring and pinon that needed to be replaced. Today chevy tells me that for that particular truck and gear ratio, there is a national back order for the parts! Is this common in these trucks? And should I get it done through Chevy or have someone else do it with after market parts?
Side note: Chevy isn't charging me labor since they didn't fix it the first time so I'm biased about taking it somewhere else!

From the comment that there is a national back order for the repair parts then it would lead me to believe that this is a fairly common problem. After market may be the most reliable but the cost sounds as if it is the deciding factor. Either way it is fixed.

Do you know what gear ratio it is? You can probably get oem gears online, but if they're payin for it, I'd wait it out. Tell then you want a rental/loaner to drive because you don't feel safe in it. Depending on how long it takes to get them in then you may have a case for the loaner
