Default will not engage anything! ( transfer case issue maybe? )

98 cheyenne /silverado 4x4. So I was tearing up my lawn trying to get up the hill in my truck I attemptet to shift it in to 4wd. the truck now does not engage any gear rolls backwards even in park and when I try to shift the tranfer case lever into another position I hear a grinding noise. I must have broken something or maybe something is not adjusted correctly feels like everything is in neutral. Im not sure how to get it engaged again.

Quick background I just replaced the transmission finished a few days ago and everything has been working perfect up until now. It should also be mentioned that I just bought the truck ( I bought it on purpose with the blown trans for dirt to replace it) ive never attempted to used the 4wd until now. When I removed the the trans I didnt change the position on the tranfer case connecting rod perhaps I need to readjust? Just brain storming here. Any help much appreciated!!
