03 Trans slip in 3rd.
Hello everyone. I'm new here on the chevy forums. Anyway, I am looking for some good advise on what to do to my 03 Chevy Silverado 1500 transmission. It started slipping in (i think) 3rd gear the other day so I brought it home and parked it. I was going like 45 and the motor just started revving up with no movement. Ive got 155,000 miles and its been working great till now. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
PS. I've never changed the fluid or filter. I am thinking of trying this first.
Thanks, Jason

I smelled the fluid and it's not burnt. It is brown (155,000 mi.) And its 2WD extended cab with 5.3 engine. Never really towed much with it and it's flat as a pancake where I live so no mountain driving.
I'm really hoping that a new filter and fluid will fix it.

Well put another failed attempt to revive a tranny with new oil and filter in the books. No such luck. It seemed like it was going to work at first, but then it started slipping worse than ever. Going to take it to the shop soon to see what the prob. is.
I found a used trans for 1300 plus tax. It's got a three year unlimited mile warranty. The local shop said they could rebuild the old one for about the same, but I doubt they will warranty it for that long. What's the best course of action?

I would go with the one with the better warranty. At work we sell GM remanufactured (from the dealer). They come with 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. If trans fails 5,000 miles from home you can go to any Chevy dealer and get it fixed, regardless if a non dealer installed it.
Yep, transmission is shot. They said they could do a rebuild for 1395 or charge me $400 to $450 to remove and replace it with the one with a three year warranty. How hard are these transmissions to remove and replace? Is that a fair price for labor?
