1500 or 2500
hey whats up everyone. I've been looking for a silverado for a few months and have been debating whether i should get a 1500 or 2500. heres my situation: I just bought a new house and i need a truck for household use and i also have a pretty big driveway and being in connecticut we get our fair share of snow. I heard that you're really not supposed to plow with a 1500... is there any substance to that? and if there is im probably only gonna plow my driveway and maybe one more. Its not gonna be used for commercial use. im also not gonna be towing anything really heavy which im not sure makes a difference. I was looking into getting anywhere from a 1995-2000 with a pretty tight budget of no more $7000-$8000. If anyone could give me some tips or advice that would be greatly appreciated

im going to assume your looking at a 4x4 if so you would be ok with the 1500 if your going to use it the way you say. my buddy had a 1500 xtedacab 97 that he used for commercial use and now i think its got less then 100,000 kms on it and its already been though 1 tranny and it falling apart. but thats from 9 years of very hard use. for 1 or 2driveways you shoud be alright.

I'm from the south, so I suppose I don't understand, but... Do I understand that you're going to mount a plow on the front of your truck just to plow your driveway and maybe one other? Even if it's a 300 foot 2-lane driveway, how often would you be plowing it? And would you leave the plow mounted to the front of your truck year round?
Anyway, for basic household use and some mild plowing (I assume mild, since you're not clearing I-95) I would say that the 1500 would be sufficient. Just get the 5.3L, 4x4, low axle gearing (3.73 or 4.10) and be sure to get the auxillary transmission cooler. But remember, this is advice from a South Carolina boy who doesn't know a thing about plowing snow. Good luck.

I would go for a 2500, more is better when you need it. The 1500 front end is not set up for a heavy plow, or heavy plowing. If you only need to move a few inches a 1500 will be OK but if you have a lot of deep snow to move(and seeing were you live I would guess alot of big snows) I would go for the 2500. You will get the 300hp 6.0 engine, a heaver duty front end, and 4.10 gears.

I have a friend that plows snow with a 1500, so you'll be al right with a half-ton, but I'd get the 2500. The bigger the bettre I say!

I would just buy an older beater pickup to use to push snow and other odd jobs, so that you wouldnt have to worry about getting a scratch or a dent. I know a lot of people that will not buy pickups if they have had a snow plow or fifth wheel ball.

In my opinion your better off paying someone to do it than putting all that money, time, parts and maintenence, depreciation and anything else someone can think of into something to plow your driveway. I've plowed commercially for about 25 years and can look at it from both sides of the fence. If you want a toy, go for it. But as far as an "investment" to plow your driveway, forget it. Buy bonds. Good luck
