1981 Speedometer not working, replaced cable!

1981 Speedometer not working, replaced cable!
1981 Chevy K20 Manual 4SPD
The speedometer stopped working, so I tried replacing the cable, which didn't help. So I pulled the cable from the back of the speedo and drove down the street and the cable didn't spin. What am I looking at here? Bad news for the transfer case?
I just bought the truck, so any advice helps. Thanks in advance.
