Default 1989 Silverado Engine Swap

Hey Guys my name is Mike and I am new to the boards. I have a 1989 Silverado which has been off the road for about 5 years in that time it has started running like crap, barely running actually. Blowing smoke like the Willie Nelson fan club. I am looking at possibly repairing the motor but also looking at the option of just replacing it. I would be replacing it with a junkyard used motor so my question is this. What year motor would be the best for my truck that would still be a simple swap or does it really matter? I know that you can get some killer deals on a crate motor for these but I'm not really interested in that for now. I have inlaws who own a salvage yard so thats why I am looking used. Currently it has the stock 5.7L 350 just looking for some advice. Thanks in advance.

The simplest and easiest would be to get another 89 350. If you go to other years you run into the problem of the motor being compatible with the computer in the truck.
