Default 1994 K2500 Engages in 4X4 Low only when off

I have a 1994 K2500 with the New Process 241 transfer case and the only way I can engage the truck in low range is to completely shut off the engine while in neutral and move floor mounted shift lever. I looked at my service manual and since it is not a Borg Warner unit it doesn't appear to have an electronic engine clutch. Even if the vehicle is stopped the truck easily shifts from 2wd to 4wd Hi but when placed in neutral stopped and try to shift into 4wd low the transfer case grinds. Only works when the engine is shutoff. Is there some engine clutch with the auto transmission that I am not aware of?

The transfer case is not all that different from an old In/Out box. As such, nothing can be turning to shift across the neutral position.

Stop the truck, put the transmission in park, then with your foot on the brake, you should be able to come across. You can't do it in neutral (or any other gear) because as soon as you disengage the transfer case, the out put shaft of the transmission will start spinning.

Allan, The owners manual says I should be able to engage even if going 2-3mph, but your advice is good and I will give it a try. Thanks again.

Electric shift, yes; but not with a 241 and a manual shift lever.
