Unhappy 1999 Sierra Auto Transmission Linkage?

I just got home, put it in park, turned it off, and went to get out. It began rolling back so I hit the brake. It showed that it was still in reverse on the dash display. The shift lever moves much more freely than normal and doesn't change the gear. It is stuck in reverse, but the lever can move to any position freely. I had a buddy move the lever while I went under the truck and checked the cable. I can feel it moving inside all the way up to where it loops up toward the transmission. So, it looks like my issue is at the point the cable connects to the tranny. I couldn't see where it connects to the tranny, but assume something must have broken or disconnected from the linkage.

What should I be looking for? Is there just a pin or something I have to put back in or replace? Am I going to have to get it on a lift or drop anything to fix it?

Default Same problem

How did this turn out? I am having the same problem. I am stuck in 2nd but the truck is not engaged in gear and we were able to pull it home. Any help would be greatly appreciated on what to look for!

That symptom is caused by the lever (either the inner lever or the outer one) coming off the square shank of the shift shaft.

If the outer is tight, drop the pan and you'll see your problem.
