Default 2001 Chevy Silverado Diesel Starter, can't remove

I disconnected the starter and when I try to remove it, I can't get through the space between the manifold and frame. It also will not come out past the exhaust pipe and the frame. What is the best route to getting this out. Will I need to remove the entire exhaust pipe to get it out and put in the new starter?
