Default 2004 Steering shaft problem silverado

I thought I saw this posted before. My father in law has a 2004 Silverado that you can feel a clunking at low speeds when turning.I thought this was due to the steering shaft needing to be greased? When I look at the shaft ,there is a 15mm bolt in the center.Do you take this out and will the shaft slide upwards to grease ? It looks a little rusty, should I use PB blaster on this before I take the bolt out ? If not,how do you remedy this problem. Thanks for everyones input. Bob J.

I have the same problem on my '05 Chevy silverado. It's a factory defect from GM with the steering sector shaft. You can replace it with an OEM part but the problem will return. I haven't fixed mine yet but.... Borgenson sector shaft through JEGGS is $226. This will solve the problem permanently.

don't quote me on this but I think I recall seeing this discussed in the forum last year and I thought someone said that Auto Zone carried one that didn't have the issue?

The new shaft from the dealer is updated. I never had one do it again after replacement.

Is this one cheaper than an after market one?
