2wd vs 4wd mpg?
Maybe 1 mpg. Added weight is about it. Not much honestly. The mpg difference comes from tire size but on the newer trucks they all have the same size tire regardless of wheels size. Overall height is pretty much the same

if you plan to drive in winter conditions forget about a 2wd truck...they are useless.

As to OP's topic question, I have one of the larger rigs,
a 2500 CCLB. BIG difference in gas mileage here. Closer to
3 or 4 MPG.
The 308 gears, great on mileage, and they save a lot of engine wear.
But take it easy with loads. You could snap an axle.
The benefit to 4WD, in many instances, is the package the truck
comes with. Many times you get the lift, and other options you
don't normally see with 2WD, without custom ordering the truck.
