Default 4x4 problem

My 4wd will work in low range but not high range. It is a 1995 Z71 with the 350 engine. Thanks<><

Hi redbone1019,

Welcome to the Chevy forums.

Is the 4WD a manual(floor) shifter or an automatic?

The light comes on in 4wd low but not in 4wd hi. The drive shaft does not spin freely in 4wd hi.<><

OK, you are going to have to walk us through the steps here to help us understand and clarify the situation.

What you are saying, is when you shift into 4WD HI, by pulling toward you with the 4wd floor shifter with the regular transmission in Drive, the 4WD HI does not engage,

but when you stop the truck, shift the regular transmission into Neutral, engage 4WD LO, then shift the regular transmission back into Drive, the 4WD LO does work, correct?

Next step, with the regular transmission in "Drive", pull the manual 4WD shifter towards you into "4HI". From a complete stop, turn your wheel to the right as though making a turn around a corner. Accelerate normally. Can you feel your front wheels pulling you through the turn as if the 4HI is engaged?

No. I don't feel the front wheels pulling. I've had this truck since it was new. I've had 4wd trucks since 1977. I know how to shift into 4wd. I know 4wd is working in low range and not in high range. What I don't know is why.<><

The first place I would check is the linkage from the shifter to the transfer case.

I'm sorry, given the information I had, it's a little hard to make assumptions.
