Default 88' 305, Engine cutting out

1988 K1500 305 is having issues. Idles rough most of the time, smell of exhaust gas is overpowering. Recently in addition to the rough idle issue it has been cutting out on acceleration. It seems to be loosing ignition power. The yellow check engine light illuminates briefly at the same time as the cutting out and the red battery light is also intermittently coming on. It doesn't stay on long, but it is getting more frequent. The battery stays fully charged. Any ideas?
Thanks, Bob

Test to make sure it isn't losing voltage in the wires. Check Spark Plugs. Could be your fuel system.

Hi fireflyer141,

Welcome to the Chevy Forums.

Is the system HEI?

It sounds like your ECM has gone to hell.

An entire Distributor tune-up kit is available from

most large parts stores fairly cheap with a new

coil, rotor, and ECM. Don't forget the silicon

grease on the base plate...
