Default 89 chevy Backfiring out the Carb

im doing an engine swap from a 4.3 to a 350 in my 89 c1500 pickup, when i went to start it up last night it backfired out the carb. i checked all the timing, it's not 180 degrees off. all the wires are in the right spot. its a new gm goodwrench engine, and a hei distributor. edelbrock carb. ussily you can get the timing close enough so it will run, but i cant even get it to start. it just doesent make any sence

Please help
thank you
Phil

If ignition timing does appear correct, your problem MAY be cam timing??

Whoa - before I go there, are your spark plug wires installed in the correct order and place. Double check that.

If the cam is out of time, synch, or alignment with the crank, this COULD be a symptom.

The best - but of course most complicated way to check it is to remove the front cover and see how the cam/crank timing marks align.

I pulled the Valve cover off, and then turned the engine over untill both valves where (UP) and the piston is top dead center, then i relisezed that my distributer was 180 degres off. .... my problem was that i had the distributor firing at the exhaust stroke and not the power stroke. in order to tell if your Top dead center, pull off the valve cover and check the status of your valves, if the exhaust valve is depresed then you know your at the wrong stroke.

Hope this helps
Phil
