Default 97 silverado engine problems

Got a 97 silveradi with a 5.0 vortec. Engine is locked up and I'm wanting to buy a crate engine. What do I need to look for?

rather than drop 10 grand into a crate, pull the existing engine and see why its locked. it would be cheaper to start with. its cheaper to do a re-build of a bottom/top end than buy a crate.

Also depends if the engine's locked up or the tranny seized for some reason...

I disagree, if you are able to pull the motor yourself it would cost about $5,000. for a new crate motor and all you do is drop it in.

maybe for some. but some people cant afford a crate and if their able, they fix it themselves. some also have fun tearing an engine apart, fixing/replacing parts, and putting it back together.
