99' silverado w/ 5.7 L oil filter & plug Q
stock engine was replaced with a 5.7 L Vortec engine , my dilemma is I do not know what year the 5.7 engine is I have to replace the oil filter and the oil drain plug , are there any markings on the engine that I can use as a reference to find out what year the engine is?
as I bought this from a dealership they do not know what year the engine is either.
thanks for reading this thread I hope to find out some information from you guys thanks

understood on the oil filter. the previous owner did not install an actual oil plug rather he installed a standard bolt and that's why it is leaking . my concern is getting the right oil plug because I do not know if the 5.7 has different styles of oil plugs for different years
Since you have the thread count, I believe that any parts house can come up with a plug that will work.
I took the oil pan plug from my sister's Jeep Cherokee and matched it with one from another type vehicle. It looked the same and worked fine.
I would think that the plug you need would fit most Chev engines.
Good luck on this.

TBI 350 = 1988-1995
Vortec 350 = 1996-2000
The engines look the same but the air intakes are different.
As for the oil pan bolt, I'd drain the oil, pull the pan and re-tap the drain hole for the larger magnetic GM drain bolt.

i wouldnt suggest that unless needed, lots of extra work and easy to mess up. Just get the thread pitch of the bolt (as long as it threads in easily) and tell them its a vortec 350,if the parts guy is worth a damn he should find it pretty easy
