Default Air Filter / Breather

Hi. I own a 1995 Chevrolet C1500, and was wondering if it was OK to change the factory breather to an aftermarket one? I know the stock breather connects to the passenger side front fender, like it is designed to be a forced-air intake. If I change this, will my engine performance still be the same? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
