Default Can 97 Silverado rear diff be filled from breather ?

I recently did some work on my diff. (seal and pinion). I overlooked how bad the fill plug was rusted but regardless the work had to be done.

I'm wondering if the diff can be filled from the breather and if so how much oil.

Does the oil have to be synthetic?

Thanks

I don't see why not. I think I added some oil or limited slip differential additive through it once.

You just risk overfilling.

How is it rusted? The threads should be fine and you shouldn't have issue removing the plug.

The hole for the ratchet drive is corroded. I don't think it will come out without stripping. I'm gonna try like hell but I doubt it gonna happen. Therefore I made this thread if need be

Not sure if PB blaster will help on the outside for the threads.

Do you think it will seriously round?

Good luck!

No. Usually you just fill it up until a little runs out of the fill plug hole.

There's no way to determine that I'm aware of, if you go through the breather.

Of course you collected all the lost gear oil and have measure it and can use that amount to determine how much to put back in???!
