i have a 82 custom deluxe and when switching to reverse i hear it go in but wont back up until i rev the engine a little and it will engage and stay in engaged. what could this be the pump or converter it switches and drive fine in all other gears but reverse any help is appreciated

 

The first sign of a plugged filter is slow engagement into reverse.

HOWEVER, it is just a short few slips until the low/reverse clutch is wiped out. They can't stand much.

I sure wouldn't drive it until I checked that filter.

ok ill try that if not then i think it might be something more cause some times it goes in but other times i got to rev it to get it to go in
